Tips for Choosing a Photographer You’ll Actually Love

Plus 10 Questions to Ask a Family Photographer Before Hiring Them

THE PHOTOGRAPHER YOU HIRE MATTERS—HERE’S WHY

Hiring a family photographer can feel like a guessing game—especially around Bend, where you’ve got no shortage of talented options. But here’s the thing: it’s not just about who takes “nice pictures.” It’s about who makes your family feel seen, comfortable, and genuinely connected during your time together.

So whether you’re new to family photos or ready to find a better fit than last year’s rushed mini-session, here are a few key tips for hiring a family photographer you’ll actually enjoy working with.

Start With Their Style

Every photographer has a different creative eye. Some love perfectly posed portraits. Others (like me) focus on natural connection, movement, and candid moments.

Spend time looking through their portfolio—are the images light and airy, bold and colorful, or moody and artistic? Does their work feel timeless or trendy? More importantly: do the families look relaxed, or do they look like they’re trying to hold it together?

Personality Matters More Than You Think

You’re going to spend time with this person. You should like them.

Check out their About page. Read their captions. Watch their Reels. Does their personality resonate with yours? Are they someone you’d feel comfortable handing the reins to? This matters way more than any technical skill.

As someone who's professionally photographed families for over 10 years and LOVES working with kids, It would be great to show you just how fun, engaging, and easy a family photo session can be.

Prioritize Communication and Process

Do they send helpful info beforehand? Are they clear about pricing, turnaround time, and next steps? Look for someone who guides you—not someone who disappears after the invoice is paid.

Invest in the Experience, Not Just the Price

It’s tempting to price shop—but remember, these aren’t just “pictures.” These are the memories your kids will flip through 20 years from now.

Cheaper doesn’t always mean better (and oftentimes it means rushed, inconsistent, or impersonal). The right photographer will give you lasting value, not just a handful of images.

Bonus: Ask for Reviews or Word of Mouth

Look at testimonials. Ask friends who they’ve used and what the experience was like. A photographer’s work is only half the story—how they make families feel is the other half.

✅ 10 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Family Photographer

Not sure what to ask when you’re reaching out to a photographer? Totally normal. Choosing the right person goes way beyond who takes “nice photos.” You want someone whose style, process, and personality align with your family. These 10 questions will help you find a photographer you’ll actually enjoy working with—and make sure you know what you’re signing up for.

1. What’s your photography style?

Look for someone who can clearly describe whether they’re lifestyle-based, traditional, documentary, or a blend. Bonus if they can show real examples.

2. How do you handle kids during a session?

A good family photographer doesn’t just tolerate chaos—they’re built for it. Make sure they know how to connect with kids at different ages.

3. Can you describe your editing style?

Ask how they edit and what kind of vibe their final galleries have—light and airy, bold and colorful, moody and dramatic, etc.

4. How long are your sessions and what’s included?

Clarify whether you’re booking a mini or full session, what you get (digital downloads, prints, etc.), and if there are any add-ons or fees.

5. Do you help with posing or give direction?

This one matters if you’re nervous in front of the camera. A great photographer should offer just enough guidance to help you relax and be yourselves.

6. Do you offer outfit or styling help?

Some photographers offer full guides or 1:1 help with outfits. Others don’t. Knowing what support you’ll get helps set expectations.

7. What’s your turnaround time for photos?

Make sure it aligns with your timeline, especially if you’re trying to print holiday cards or share with family.

8. What’s your privacy policy for sharing images?

If privacy matters to you, ask whether the photographer posts client images online and how they get permission. (I build privacy into every step - click here to learn more.)

9. Can I see a full session gallery?

This helps you get a feel for consistency, not just highlight images. You want to love the full story—not just the best 5 shots.

10. What’s your approach if someone (kid or adult) isn’t into it?

Sessions don’t always go smoothly, and that’s okay. A great photographer should be able to adapt, pivot, and keep the energy positive.

Let’s Make It Easy

Finding a photographer you trust doesn’t have to be stressful. If you’re here in Central Oregon, I’d love to be considered. Whether we’re hiking a trail, exploring your backyard, or playing near the river, my goal is simple: help you feel like yourselves and capture that feeling forever.

Frequently asked queStions

about Hiring The Right Family Photographer

01. Should I choose someone who offers mini sessions or full sessions?

Answer: It depends on your goals. Minis are fast and lower cost, but there’s less room for real connection (especially with young kids). Full sessions give you time to settle in, relax, and capture more than just “smile for the camera.” I offer both—but full sessions are where the magic really unfolds.

02. How important is editing style when choosing a photographer?

Answer: Very. Editing is a huge part of your final images. Look for consistency across their portfolio and make sure the colors, light, and tone match your vibe. My style leans bold, natural, and timeless—with rich colors and real emotion.

03. How far in advance should I book a family photographer?

Answer: For weekend sessions in fall, 4–6 weeks ahead is ideal. In slower seasons, 1–2 weeks may be fine. I keep things flexible, but popular dates (especially golden hour sessions in Central Oregon) do fill up quickly.

04. What should I expect to spend on professional family session?

Answer: Every photographer prices differently, but if you're looking for professional quality in the Bend area, budget $400–800+ depending on session length, experience, and what’s included.
