How to Pose for Family Photos Without Feeling Awkward

Tips & Tricks to Feel 100% You in Family Photography

Natural Family Photo Poses You’ll Actually Like

Worried you won’t know what to do with your hands? Or that your kids will melt down the second I lift my camera? You’re not alone. Most families feel unsure about how to pose for photos... especially if you’re the one usually behind the camera, not in front of it.

Here’s the good news: you don’t need to practice in the mirror or memorize Pinterest poses. My sessions are designed to feel real, natural, and maybe even fun (yep, I said it). These posing tips are here to reassure you: I’ve got this. You just need to show up.

Whether we’re shooting in the piney woods around Bend or out in the open sage near Smith Rock, these are the five things I guide you through to keep it relaxed, real, and completely un-awkward.

Movement Beats Stillness Every Time

No stiff standing required.

If I had a motto for family sessions, it might be “keep it moving.” I’ll guide you through walking, snuggling, spinning, chasing, or swinging your toddler around. When your body’s in motion, everything softens: expressions, posture, even nerves. The result? Images that feel full of life, not like yearbook photos.

Bend pro tip: If we’re shooting at Shevlin Park or along the Deschutes River Trail, the natural landscape gives us the perfect excuse to wander, climb, or let the kids explore—posing without ever “posing.”

Focus on Each Other, Not the Camera

The best photos come when you forget the lens.

I’ll get a few of everyone looking and smiling (we’ll make it fun, I promise), but most of the time, I’ll prompt connection. That might mean whispering something silly to your kid, snuggling into your partner, or letting your baby hold your hand while you walk.

If it feels awkward to stare at the camera, good news: you don’t have to. Look at each other. Be in your own little world. That’s where the magic is.

I’ll Tell You What to Do With Your Hands

And your feet. And everything else.

Don’t worry about remembering what looks good. I’ll guide you in a way that’s super easy to follow, often using prompts instead of poses. Think: “Everyone give mom a bear hug” or “Tickle your brother’s neck—go!” These prompts create movement and reaction, which turns into genuine expression. It’s posing without feeling like posing.

You Don’t Have to Fake Anything

Real connection > perfect posture.

You don’t need to stand up straight, angle your chin, or smile on cue. If your kid is being wild or clingy or shy—that’s okay. I’ll still make magic happen. I’d rather capture your family as you are than as you think you “should” be.

I’ve Got You, Start to Finish

My job is to lead. Yours is to connect.

Every family that shows up worried about posing walks away saying the same thing: “That was actually fun.” I’ll give you enough direction to feel confident but leave plenty of space for real moments to unfold. Whether we’re shooting in a meadow, up a dusty trail, or on your front porch, the vibe is always the same: relaxed, real, and fully you.

Real Talk for Real Families

If you’ve been putting off family photography because you hate the idea of awkward poses and fake smiles—I see you. And I promise, it doesn’t have to be that way. With the right guidance (hi, that’s me), your session will feel more like a hangout and less like a photo shoot.

I’ll handle the posing. You handle the loving. Deal?

Frequently asked queStions

about Natural Family Photography

01. What if I’m not feeling super confident about how I look?

Answer: I get it. And I promise, this session isn’t about perfection—it’s about connection. I use angles, lighting, and direction that flatter you naturally. Plus, the best photos aren’t always the posed ones—they’re the ones where you’re fully present with your people.

02. What if I always feel like I have a weird smile in photos?

Answer: That’s because most photos have asked you to “smile on demand.” I won’t. Instead, we’ll laugh, move, snuggle, or joke—and I’ll capture the moment when your real smile shows up. No fake grins required.

03. What if my kids are wild and I’m flustered?

Answer: That’s real life. I lean into the chaos and help bring the calm when needed. You don’t have to perform or hold everything together. Let your kids be kids, and I’ll meet the moment with patience and direction. You’re allowed to just be.

04. I don’t love my postpartum body—should I wait?

Answer: You deserve to be in the frame now. These photos are about presence, not perfection. I’ll pose you with care and intention, and I promise you’ll look back at these photos with gratitude—not critique.
