Childhood friends, a decade of "almost," a pro/con list, and a wedding day at one of the most breathtaking venues in the Pacific Northwest

From Soccer Teammates to This
Stephanie and Roby met in middle school, became soccer teammates in high school, and spent the better part of a decade being best friends with an unspoken undercurrent of something more. In 2020, when they both ended up back home with their plans blown up, they did the most them thing possible: they made a pro/con list about dating each other. Three hours of debating both sides later, they decided making out was a better use of their time.
A few weeks into dating, Roby left for grad school in New York. Then one night he called her. "I'm coming home," he said. "Not just for Christmas. You're in Portland. I want to come home to you." There was no lightning bolt moment between these two, just a long, slow sigh of relief. Yeah, duh, of course. I photographed their engagement and I'll tell you firsthand: being around Stephanie and Roby is something you feel the second you're in the room with them. 100% twitterpated.
The Griffin House Is Something Else
I'll say it plainly: The Griffin House in Hood River is one of the most stunning wedding venues I've ever set foot in. It sits in the Columbia River Gorge with views that stop you in your tracks, and the property itself is the kind of place that makes a photographer's job genuinely exciting. Every angle is worth shooting. Every corner of the grounds has something going for it. I brought a drone and the aerial shots alone tell you everything you need to know about why this place is a gem of the Pacific Northwest.
It's not just beautiful. It's beautifully designed for a wedding day. The flow of the space, the indoor and outdoor options, the way the light moves through the property, the backdrop of the Gorge behind everything, it all works together in a way that very few venues pull off. If The Griffin House isn't on your radar for a premium Oregon wedding, it should be.
The Dress, a Dad, and the First Look
Stephanie's dress was incredible, and I mean that. We got shots of it hanging in the space before she put it on and it was clear this was going to be one of those dresses that photographed beautifully no matter what we did with it. She got her hair and makeup done at the venue and by the time she was ready, the whole energy of the day had shifted to something a little more electric.
Before the first look with Roby, she shared a quiet moment with her dad. I don't have the right words to describe what it looks like when a father sees his daughter in her wedding dress for the first time. You don't need words. The photos say it completely.
The first look with Roby happened behind the house, overlooking the Columbia River Gorge. Let that backdrop sink in for a second. The Gorge stretching out behind them, perfect June light, and two people who've known each other since middle school finally seeing each other on their wedding day. Roby's reaction was everything. These two are not shy about how they feel about each other and this moment was no exception. It was beautiful.
The Wedding Party
After the first look, we enjoyed photography with the wedding party on The Griffin House grounds. This is one of the things I love most about this venue: you don't have to go anywhere and photos are easy in every direction. The crew was fun, relaxed, and down for all of it. These are the kinds of portraits that feel less like a photo session and more like a group of people having a great time together, which is exactly what makes them work.
A Ceremony Short, Sweet, and Perfect
The ceremony was exactly right. Not too long, not drawn out, just the right amount of everything. The Griffin House gave them a setting that did the heavy lifting on atmosphere, and Stephanie and Roby brought the emotion. Roby's vows were funny and beautiful in the exact way you'd expect from someone who's been making this woman laugh since they were 14. The whole thing was tight and intentional and genuinely moving. Short ceremonies done well are some of my favorites to photograph because the emotion is concentrated and nothing gets lost.
A Certificate and a Baby Grand Piano
Right after the ceremony, Stephanie and Roby signed their marriage certificate inside the house. It's one of those moments that can feel like a formality but rarely does when you're actually in the room for it. A few minutes later, Roby sat down at the baby grand piano in The Griffin House and played for his new wife. He's a pianist, and this was one of those moments I wasn't fully prepared for. Just the two of them, the piano, and the Gorge outside the windows. I'm including photos of this in the blog because it deserves to be seen. It's the kind of moment that defines a wedding day.
The Reception Tent That Changes Everything
I have to talk about the reception tent at The Griffin House because it is genuinely one of the most beautiful reception spaces I've ever photographed in. It's new, it's black, and it has clear walls and a clear roof. What that means in practice is that you're sitting inside a structure that feels like a garden. You're protected from the elements, you're in a defined space, but you're surrounded by the outdoors on all sides and the light comes through beautifully. On a night like Stephanie and Roby's, with golden hour rolling in and the Gorge just outside, it was stunning.
They kicked off the reception with fondue, which immediately set the tone. Relaxed, fun, personal. The toasts followed and they were wonderful. The Best Man, Kaya, Alison (Steph's sister), the father of the bride, and Lydia, Steph's best friend, each brought something great to the room. I especially love how much Steph in particular laughed and laughed through them all. The speeches were the kind that remind you why weddings are worth all the planning.
They Came Prepared for the First Dance
Stephanie and Roby choreographed their first dance, and it showed in the best possible way. They clearly had a great time putting it together and had an equally great time performing it in front of everyone who loves them. After that, the parents got their turns on the floor, and watching both sets of parents slow dance with their kids was one of those moments that sneaks up on you. The joy in the room during those dances was real and easy to photograph.
Golden Hour on the Gorge
During the reception, we slipped out for couple's portraits during golden hour and I want to be direct: this was one of my favorite portrait sessions of the year. The Griffin House property at golden hour with the Columbia River Gorge as your backdrop is almost unfairly beautiful. Stephanie's dress caught the wind and looked absolutely incredible in motion. Roby had eyes only for her the entire time, which made my job very easy. They were so happy and so in love, and the location did the rest. I genuinely struggled to narrow down which photos to include here because there were too many great ones. That's a damn good problem to have.
The Rest of The Night
Back inside, the night found its rhythm and didn't let go. The cake got cut. Ring shots happened. The dance floor filled up and stayed that way. These were people who had shown up for Stephanie and Roby and weren't in any hurry to stop celebrating them.
When I look back at the full arc of this day, from the drone shots over The Griffin House grounds in the morning to the last frames on the dance floor, it's one of those days I'll carry with me for a long time. Great venue. Great guests. Great couple. Incredible celebration.
WHY THE GRIFFIN HOUSE BELONGS ON YOUR Wedding Venue RADAR
If you're planning a wedding in the Pacific Northwest and you haven't seriously looked at The Griffin House in Hood River, I'd encourage you to do that today. As someone who has shot wedding photography at The Griffin House in Hood River firsthand, here's what makes it genuinely special:
- The setting is world-class. The Columbia River Gorge as your backdrop isn't something you can replicate anywhere else. Every photo taken on this property has a sense of place that's immediately recognizable and undeniably stunning.
- The venue is beautiful at every turn. From the interior of the house to the ceremony grounds to the reception tent, there isn't a bad angle on this property. Drone, wide, portrait, detail: it all works.
- The reception tent is unlike anything I've seen at other venues in the region. Clear walls, clear roof, black structure. It's like being outdoors while being completely comfortable. The light inside is gorgeous and the views don't quit.
- The space has a natural flow that makes a wedding day feel easy. Everything is accessible, the transitions between spaces feel organic, and the venue is designed in a way that keeps the day moving without feeling rushed.
- It photographs beautifully in any light. Golden hour on the Gorge is something special, but even earlier in the day when the light is softer, this venue never stops delivering.
If you're getting married at The Griffin House in Hood River and you want a photographer who is genuinely excited to be there, let's talk. Reach out and let's start putting your day together.
