STEPHANIE & ROBY: from quiet riverbanks to winter squals

February in Sunriver doesn't mess around


When I pulled up to Stephanie’s family home, there was just a light dusting of snow on the ground. That kind of winter calm that makes everything feel slowed down in the best way. By the time we wrapped? Full winter storm. And these two were fully committed to a great time!


I’m photographing their wedding in June at Griffin House, so getting to meet up beforehand for their engagement session felt like the perfect way to kick things off.

Starting Somewhere That Matters


We began at Stephanie’s family home in Sunriver. This place isn’t just a house to her. She grew up exploring the trails, the trees, and the quiet corners around it. The spot she took me to for photos? She’s loved that location since she was a kid.


I always love when couples bring me somewhere that means something. It changes the energy. You’re not just picking a pretty backdrop. You’re stepping into a piece of someone’s story. And this one was quiet, tucked away, and beautiful in a very Central Oregon kind of way.

Playful without Pressure.


When I first talked with Stephanie & Roby, I learned they feel so much like many couples I photograph: they don't want to feel like photos are a chore... and they definitely don't want the end-game to be about polished perfection on social media.


So here’s what we did instead: we ignored all of that.


We walked. We talked. We laughed (a lot!). We tried things. I let them be themselves and gave some support along the way. If something felt fun, we leaned on in. There’s something so fun about a couple who is calm enough to just be themselves and not put on a show.


It was fun watching that dynamic show up naturally in the frames.

When the storm rolled in


About halfway through, the weather slowly turned. The air remained dead-calm... but there was a subtle shift in the distance. I noticed clouds slowly rolling in... and the trees off in the distance growing fuzzy.


Snow started softly falling in thick flakes! No wind. No bone-chilling bite. Just fat flakes falling everywhere! Instead of running for cover, we kept going. Snow in their hair. That kind of dramatic winter backdrop you can’t plan for.


Damn, I love moments like this!


Because when you’re in it together, not worrying about perfection, something so real shows up.

Looking Ahead to June


These two were best friends long before they were anything else. That foundation shows. They grew up together. They know each other deeply. And now they’re stepping into this next season with a relaxed intention.


Their June wedding is going to be intimate, thoughtful, and fun. Good food. Good people. Nature doing most of the heavy lifting. Exactly how it should be.


But for now, this snowy February day in Sunriver was the perfect start.
