Pick Outfits That Feel LIKe You
Engagement sessions are one of my favorite things to photograph — not just because of the scenery (though hey, Central Oregon shows off so well), but because of what they represent. These shoots are all about slowing down, being fully present with your partner, and capturing this wild, exciting season of life before the big day.
But before we meet up in the mountains or high desert, one of the biggest questions I hear is:
“What should we wear?”
Here’s the good news: you don’t have to overthink it. This guide will help you choose outfits that photograph beautifully and feel true to who you two are.
Pick Outfits That Feel Like You
Engagement sessions should feel like you, just a little elevated. You don’t need to wear anything stuffy or totally unfamiliar. Instead, reach for what makes you feel confident, connected, and relaxed. The goal is to capture your bond, not stage a fashion editorial (unless that's your thing... if so, let's go for it!).
Pro Tip: trust your gut. If you wouldn’t normally wear it on a date or walking around downtown Bend, it might not be the best fit here either.
Neutrals & Earth Tones Work Best
Bold colors or loud prints can sometimes pull focus away from what really matters: your expressions, the emotion, the setting, and your connection. I recommend soft, natural tones — think beige, olive, rust, cream, denim, warm whites, dusty blues, or deep green. These photograph incredibly well in Central Oregon’s outdoor light and natural beauty.
If one of you wants to add a pop of color or pattern, make sure it complements your partner’s outfit, not competes with it.
Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days of twinning outfits. Instead, look for pieces that complement each other in tone, texture, or vibe. Think of it like you’re attending the same dinner party, not auditioning for the same role.
If one of you is in jeans and boots, the other shouldn’t be in a floor-length gown — unless that juxtaposition is totally your thing.
Try On Your Outfits Beforehand
Quick PSA: it’s so worth trying everything on in advance. Walk around in it. Sit down. Hug. Twirl. Make sure it moves well and you feel good in it. If something pulls weird, rides up, or makes you feel self-conscious — ditch it.
The best photos come from people who feel comfortable and confident.
Bring Options (and Layers)
Especially here in Bend, Oregon, the weather can shift fast. Layers are your best friend — denim jackets, cozy sweaters, flowy scarves. These not only look great in photos but give us room to play with texture and movement.
If you’re on the fence between two outfits, bring them both (or more!). We’ll likely have time for a quick swap or two during the engagement session.
Dress for the Setting
If we’re heading out into the forest or climbing around rocky overlooks, your footwear should match the adventure. You can always pack fancier shoes in a tote and change when we’re ready for portraits — comfort first, always. This is an engagement photoshoot and we won't be standing still — plan on outfits and footwear that lets you stroll, sit, lay down, and run.
Also: Central Oregon can be dusty, windy, and wild in the best ways. Embrace it — we’re not aiming for perfection; we’re aiming for real.
Skip the Logos and Graphics
Avoid big logos, distracting graphics, or super-bright neons. These pull focus from the connection between you two and often don’t translate well on camera.
If you’re unsure, snap a photo of each other on your phone in natural light. That quick test will usually show you if something works or not.
Consider Hair, Makeup, and Grooming
If you’ve booked a makeup trial for the wedding, this is a great day to use it. Professionally done (or just thoughtfully styled) hair and makeup can boost your confidence and save editing time.
But again — don’t do anything that makes you feel unlike you.
Don’t Stress Perfection
Engagement sessions are laid-back for a reason. I’ll guide you through poses and prompts that bring out your real connection. You don’t need to “perform” — just show up ready to hang out with your favorite person.
This is your warm-up for the big day. And if you lean into the experience, the photos will do all the heavy lifting.
