Getting Ready at the Society Hotel in Bingen

Maddy and her bridal party started the day at the Society Hotel in Bingen, Washington, and if you have not been there, put it on your list. It is a beautifully restored 1908 schoolhouse tucked into the Columbia River Gorge, complete with a bathhouse and spa that includes a saltwater soaking pool, a hot tub, a cold plunge, and a sauna. The whole property has this unique, off-the-beaten-path charm that makes it a perfect place to slow down, breathe, and enjoy the morning of a wedding with the people who matter most. The morning was calm, unhurried, and full of smiles.

I met Maddy here to photograph her details and dress, then spent some time with the bridal party for portraits. The light in that space is soft and generous, and everyone was in a great mood. It was the ideal way to start the day.

Just A 30-Minute Drive to The Base of Mt. Adams and the Groomsmen at trout Lake Hall

From Bingen, I drove the 30 minutes up to Trout Lake to meet David and his groomsmen at Trout Lake Hall. They were getting ready in the venue's green room, and the energy was exactly what you would hope for: relaxed, cracking jokes, ready to celebrate. Dana, the manager at Trout Lake Hall, made sure everything was set up and taken care of before I even arrived. If you have not worked with Dana yet, you are in for a treat. She is always calm, always smiling, and she has a way of making you feel welcome the second you walk in the door. She even poured a round of shots for the guys as we jumped into groomsmen portraits, which set the right tone for the rest of the day.

A Ceremony on the Back Lawn of Trout Lake Hall Under Perfect Fall Skies

The weather could not have been better. Sunny, warm, no wind. Quintessential Pacific Northwest fall. Guests were shuttled up from the Society Hotel courtesy of Mt. Hood Meadows, whose transportation made the whole logistics side of the day feel effortless, and by 4pm everyone was seated on the back lawn under blue skies. A violinist and guitarist played through the processional and later into cocktail hour, adding this beautiful layer of live music to the whole afternoon.

Maddy and David chose not to do a first look, so David saw her for the very first time as she stepped outside and made her way onto the back lawn. That is one of my favorite moments to photograph at any wedding, and this one hit the way you want it to. Their ceremony was personal and full of meaning, with a subtle nod to Maddy's heritage in the breaking of the glass and a joyful "Mazel tov" from the guests.

Sunset Portraits With a Dog Named Millie

After the ceremony, we knocked out family photos and wedding party portraits, then Maddy and David and I stepped away for their couple's portraits during cocktail hour. We ended up in the back field as the sun dropped low, and their dog Millie joined for a few frames, expertly wrangled by Wags & Garland, the vendor Maddy hired to look after her for the day. If you are getting married in the Columbia River Gorge area and want your dog at the wedding without the stress of coordinating it all yourself, this is the perfect move. Toasts and Reception in Front of the Hall

The reception was held in front of Trout Lake Hall, where the ambiance is hard to beat. Wooden benches, string lights overhead, the woodchip ground crunching under everyone's feet, and this warm rustic charm that makes you feel like you have stepped into somewhere special. Guests gathered around long tables for the buffet dinner of brisket and salmon, and then the toasts started.

The speeches were great. One moment that will stick with me: as Maddy was tearing up during one of the toasts, David reached over and gently dried her eyes for her. That's the kind of thing you cannot script, and it is exactly why I do this job! I love documenting those amazing moments!

Inside for First Dances, Cake, and a Dance Floor That Did Not Stop

Once dinner wrapped, everyone moved inside for the cake cutting and first dances. Maddy and David's first dance was made even more special because Maddy's great friend, Helen, sang for it live. There is something about a first dance being performed by someone who loves you that hits deep. It was such a beautiful moment.

From there, the band took over and the dance floor filled up fast. Karlee Patton of Bad Portraits kept a steady stream of guests laughing all night with her doodle activation, a smile on her face the entire time. It was a great guest experience for a wedding, and people gravitated toward it all evening.

Maddy and David closed out my coverage with hotdogs, because at the end of a long, incredible day, sometimes that is exactly what hits the spot! :)
