How Katie and Casey stayed true to their vision and gave themselves one of the most relaxed wedding days I've photographed

Linfield College, Ten Years Apart, and a Coffee in Bend
Katie and Casey met at Linfield College back in 2013. They dated for a while, graduated, and life took them in different directions. Katie went to Florida to teach. Casey went to OHSU for dental school. Ten years went by. Then Casey reached out to Katie saying he'd just moved to Bend and wondered if she wanted to grab coffee. The timing was almost unbelievable. Katie, originally from Bend, had already been planning her move back for the summer. They reconnected, picked up where some part of them had always left off, and the rest wrote itself. They now live together and manage a dental practice on the south side of Bend. In their free time they're enjoying CrossFit or mountain biking. I love their combination of relaxation and motivation.
What Katie and Casey Asked For From Day One
From our very first conversation, Katie and Casey were clear with me about what they wanted. No huge production. No lavish anything. A small guest list of 70 of their closest people. A limited vendor team. A DIY approach throughout. They wanted the day to feel easygoing from start to finish. They weren't looking to perform or impress. They just wanted to be surrounded by the people they love most, in a place that felt right, and let the day unfold on its own terms. I love couples like this because their vision of what they want always shows up in the photos.
Casey, His Friends, and a Shot of Booker's
I started my day with Casey hanging out in one of Suttle Lodge's lakeside cabins with his closest friends. The vibe was exactly what you'd expect from this crew: relaxed, no stress, lots of jokes, everyone enjoying each other's company. We did a round of Booker's whiskey before I pulled Casey away to get him into position for the first look. That's the kind of pre-ceremony moment you can't manufacture, and I'm always grateful when a couple lets me capture it as it is instead of trying to stage it.
A First Look Framed by Fall Color
I positioned Casey in a spot surrounded by the changing trees. Brilliant reds, yellows, and greens on every side of him. Then I walked back to Katie's cabin and brought her over to meet him. The two of them locked eyes and lit up. Smiling ear to ear, no fuss, just the two of them in a moment they'd been building toward for over a decade. The Deschutes National Forest did its part with the backdrop, but Katie and Casey were the ones making the frame.
After the first look, I spent some time photographing Katie with each of her closest friends. One simple portrait of her with each person, followed by a group shot. That was it. No sprawling bridal party production, no choreographed group poses, just a few meaningful photos documenting the people who matter most to her. It was the kind of restraint that only works when a couple truly knows what they want, and Katie and Casey knew.
A Sixteen-Minute Ceremony That Stole the Show
The ceremony was short... just sixteen minutes from start to finish. Just Katie, Casey, and their officiant Wendy Duncan of Wendy Duncan Ministries, who deserves a paragraph of her own. I've known Wendy for a few years and worked with her around Central Oregon, and she is jaw-dropping behind the mic. Her voice is a melody. She's engaging without being over the top. She has this exact balance of warmth and professionalism that makes every single person in the audience feel present. Katie and Casey chose her, and that choice set the tone for the entire ceremony. They read vows (lots of happy tears), exchanged rings, and shared a happy first kiss as a married couple. Done. That was the whole thing, and it was absolutely awesome.
Family Photos and a Thein Family Classic
Family portraits came next. Everyone was easy to work with, which is always a reflection of how a couple navigates their own people on the wedding day. One moment I have to call out: Casey's family has a tradition of doing what I'd affectionately call a "security guard" photo. Casey, his brother, mom, and dad all put on black sunglasses and go completely stone-faced serious for the camera. It was one of the most unexpectedly bad-ass family portraits I've shot this year, and it's exactly the kind of personal touch I live for.
Rings in the Fall Leaves
While Katie and Casey were enjoying some cocktail hour, I grabbed their rings and found a spot in the golden leaves to shoot some detail photos. The light was dropping, the leaves were catching the last of the sun, and the rings sat perfectly in all of it. These are the kind of small, quiet frames that end up being some of my favorite images from a wedding like this one.
Sunset on the Dock, With the Lake All to Ourselves
Just as everyone was sitting down for dinner, I pulled Katie and Casey out to the dock for their sunset portraits. Here's one of the best parts about getting married at Suttle Lodge: the whole property is yours! What's normally a bustling dock full of day-trippers and kids running around with ice cream was completely ours. No strangers, no interruptions, just the three of us, the lake, and that soft golden Central Oregon fall light. Suttle Lodge really is like a private summer camp when you lock it down for a wedding, and this was the moment that made that most obvious.
Speeches, a Live Band, and a Night That Didn't Stop
After dinner, we moved to the back deck for a few speeches, and the band, Sugar Mama, took over for the rest of the evening. The weather held up beautifully. Unseasonably warm for early October, no wind, even after the sun went down the air stayed comfortable. The dance floor stayed full. There was no cake cutting. No first dances. None of the traditional fluff. Katie and Casey had told me from the beginning this wasn't the kind of wedding they wanted, and they followed through on that vision completely. The result was a day that felt entirely theirs, with no borrowed template, no obligatory moments, no pressure to perform.
Watching a couple commit to what they actually want is one of the most satisfying parts of this job. Katie and Casey nailed it!
