How one fake photoshoot and a code word changed everything at sunset

The Phone Call That Started Everything

It didn't start with Matt. It started with Lauren, Saylor's best friend, who called me on Matt's behalf because he was deep in military training and needed someone he could trust to help pull this off. Lauren had been there since the beginning of Matt and Saylor's relationship, and the way she talked about the two of them made it immediately clear why Matt recruited her. She gave me everything I needed to understand who Saylor was, what would matter to her, and what kind of moment we were trying to create. A few weeks later, Matt, Lauren and I finally connected on a web call. We talked through locations, weather, timing, and logistics. Given how limited his time was, every minute of that conversation counted, and we made it count.

The Plan: A Fake Friendship Photoshoot

Lauren's cover story was perfect. She told Saylor they were doing a celebratory girlfriend shoot, just the two of them, to honor their friendship. Saylor had no idea Matt was even in the state. On the day of the proposal, I met Matt near the spot first, walked the final location with him, and we locked in every detail: where he would hide, which direction Saylor would be facing, and the code word for him to pop out. When my camera settings were dialed and I was ready for the real action, I would say "PERFECT" out loud, and that was Matt's cue to come out of the bushes. I then hiked out to meet Lauren and Saylor at the trailhead, introduced myself, and played the role of their photographer for a genuine friendship session. We shot a few frames on the way in like it was any other shoot, laughing and talking the whole time. Saylor was completely relaxed.

One Word, One Shadow, One Knee

When we reached the spot, I positioned them both carefully so Saylor's back was toward Matt's hiding place. I made a few small adjustments, got my framing right, and said the word. Matt stepped out from behind the brush and started moving toward Saylor and Lauren. At that point, I asked Lauren to move a bit for a new photo while Matt stepped in, took over, and wrapped Saylor up in such a beautiful hug... followed by the most perfect dropped-knee proposal. Saylor turned and her reaction was everything. The Cascades sitting behind them, the light doing exactly what Sparks Lake light does at sunset, and two people in the middle of the best moment of their lives. We spent the rest of the evening shooting together in the mountains above Bend, and every frame felt like a reward for all the planning that came before it.

WHY SPARKS LAKE BELONGS ON YOUR PROPOSAL RADAR

Sparks Lake is one of Central Oregon's most stunning natural settings, and it's one of my favorite places to work as a proposal photographer near Bend. Here's why it earns that reputation every single time.

  • The volcanic backdrop of South Sister and Broken Top creates a dramatic, one of a kind frame that no venue can replicate
  • Golden hour light at Sparks Lake is exceptional, the water reflects the sky and the mountains in a way that makes every photo feel cinematic
  • The trails offer natural cover, which makes hiding a proposer surprisingly easy without feeling staged
  • It's secluded enough that outside distractions are minimal, just you, your person, and the mountains
  • The location lends itself to a full evening of portraits after the proposal, so you leave with a complete gallery, not just a single moment
  • Easy access from Bend makes it a practical choice without sacrificing any of the drama

If you're planning a surprise proposal in the Bend area and want someone who will scout the location, set you up for success, and be ready the moment you need me, I'd love to be part of your plan. Let's talk... contact me here.
