What it looks like when a wedding has the perfect balance of laughing so hard you cry and crying so hard you laugh

How These Two Even Got Here
Aubin and Darren met the first week of college in 2014 on the same dorm floor. If you ever get the chance to ask them about the story of Darren losing his dorm key, do yourself a favor and ask. It came up during the ceremony and it is all-time. They dated on and off through school, moved to Seattle together after graduation, got their first apartment in 2019, and built something awesome. Bend had been part of their story for years through trips they'd taken together, so when it came time to pick a wedding location, it was never really a debate. Riverhouse Lodge was the move.
Getting Ready at Riverhouse
The morning of a wedding tells you a lot about the people you're about to photograph. With Aubin and Darren, I already knew what kind of day it was going to be before the ceremony even started. The groom and his groomsmen brought real energy, and the bridal suite was full of laughter. Seven bridesmaids and seven groomsmen total. A big crew, and exactly the right kind.
Before she walked down the aisle, Aubin shared a quiet first look with her dad. It was one of those small, private moments that doesn't need a caption. He was completely in love with seeing his daughter in that dress and she knew it. I'm keeping that one between them and not sharing it here, but it's a moment I won't forget.
The Ceremony on the Grass
The ceremony took place on a beautiful stretch of green grass right on the Riverhouse property. On one side, a stunning natural rock wall wraps the space and gives it a sense of place that you can't build or fake. On the other side, the Deschutes River moves through the trees. It's a wedding ceremony settings where the backdrop does its job so well.
And then the vows started. I don't want to give too much away because some things are better felt in person than read in a blog post, but I will say this: I have photographed a lot of weddings. Aubin and Darren's vows were the funniest I have ever heard. The kind of funny that comes from two people who have actually lived life together and aren't afraid to be completely real in front of everyone they love. People were losing it. And then the emotion hit right behind the laughter, and people were crying. It went back and forth like that all day and it was one of the most incredible ceremonies I've ever had the privilege of photographing.
cocktail Hour Right on the River
After the ceremony, guests moved to the open patio and lounge space right next to the Riverhouse Lodge dining area right on the river. I want to make sure that lands the right way: this cocktail hour space sits directly on the Deschutes River. Not kind of nearby. Right next to it. It is genuinely stunning and one of the details about Riverhouse that I think catches people off guard when they experience it for the first time.
The fact that this venue is a stone's throw from downtown Bend and offers a hotel, a great restaurant, event space, and a full wedding venue all in one place is something I bring up every time I talk about Riverhouse wedding photography. It's just an incredibly well-rounded place to host a wedding day. Guests were relaxed, drinks were flowing, and the river did what it always does: made everything look and feel better.
We Just Like Smiling Too Much
During our sunset couple portrait session, I set up to try a neutral, more editorial pose. Just a little variety, a different look for the gallery. Aubin looked at me, completely calm, and said something along the lines of, "Nah... we won't be able to do that. We just like smiling too much."
I stopped. I thought about it. I smiled. :) She was spot on!
These two could not not smile. Not during prep, not during the ceremony, not during cocktail hour, not during portraits. The happiness was just constantly there, right at the surface, ready to come out. I scrapped the neutral pose and didn't look back. The Riverhouse grounds gave us everything we needed: riverside paths, the pedestrian bridge crossing the Deschutes, wide open green space from the nearby golf course, and light that turned gold right on cue. Aubin and Darren got to be themselves, and that was more than enough.
The Speeches That Wrecked Everyone
I said it in the meta and I'll say it again here: I have never cried and laughed this much at a wedding. The speeches were something else. They were full of ruckus laughter and real, unguarded emotion and they built on each other in a way that had the whole room completely absorbed. Aubin and Darren sat there and took it all in with smiles (and tears) on their faces, embracing every amazing word. These are people who are deeply loved by the people around them and it showed in every toast that was made in their honor.
Dances, a Group Shot, and a Full Dance Floor
The first dances were exactly what you'd expect from these two: real, warm, and worth photographing. Mother and son, father and daughter, then Aubin and Darren together. Each one carried its own emotion without trying too hard.
Then we pulled everyone onto the dance floor for a massive group photo and the night opened up. People let loose. The energy was incredible! This was a crowd that came to celebrate! Some of my favorite candids came out of that dance floor.
WHY RIVERHOUSE IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE PLACES FOR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY IN BEND
I've shot at a lot of venues in Central Oregon. Riverhouse on the Deschutes is one that I genuinely look forward to every single time. As a Riverhouse wedding photographer, here's what I keep coming back to:
- The location is unlike anything else in Bend. A full-service hotel, a great restaurant, event spaces, and a wedding venue all in one spot, right on the Deschutes River and minutes from downtown. Couples get so much flexibility without having to go anywhere.
- The ceremony space has real character. The natural rock wall, the green grass, the river through the trees. You're not standing in front of a blank backdrop. The setting does real work and it photographs beautifully in any light.
- The cocktail hour patio is stunning. Directly on the river, open air, relaxed and impressive at the same time. Guests consistently love this part of the day at Riverhouse.
- The portrait variety is hard to beat. River shots, the pedestrian bridge, green space, stone details, golden hour light. I never run out of places to take a couple at Riverhouse. Every session feels different.
- The team there takes care of people. The staff is attentive, the logistics run smoothly, and everyone from vendors to guests walks away feeling well taken care of. That makes a big difference on a long wedding day.
If you're planning a wedding at Riverhouse Lodge in Bend, Oregon and you're looking for a photographer who loves shooting there, I'd love to hear about your day. Let's talk.
