We Weren't Supposed to Meet Before the Wedding Day

Megan and Matt live in Austin, Texas, and when we first connected about their wedding we determined an engagement session probably wasn't going to happen given the distance. We wrote it off. I was going to walk into their wedding day having never met them in person, which is not my usual style but sometimes it's just how the logistics work out with out-of-state couples.

Then Megan and Matt made a decision to fly up to Hood River for Columbia Gorge Hotel's spring open house, where the venue was showcasing itself to existing and potential clients. I happened to be there as one of the vendors, part of a small group of us on hand to meet couples touring the property. I was walking to the front door and glanced over to my right, and there was this couple approaching the same door at the exact same moment. It was them! Of all the timing in the world. We connected in person on the spot, and as a bonus I even squeezed in a quick 20-minute engagement session for them that afternoon. Sometimes things just line up.

From Hinge in Austin to a Wedding in the Gorge

Megan and Matt met on Hinge about six months after Megan moved to Austin. She had it planned in her head that Austin was a one-year stop and Washington DC was the long-term goal. On their first date walking around Lady Bird Lake, she told Matt exactly that. A few months later Matt called her and said he wanted to get serious, and rather than let her plans blow it up, he agreed to move with her to DC for a year to see how they both felt.

DC didn't happen, but that's kind of the point. The trip to explore neighborhoods, the second work trip that ended with Megan calling Matt from a cold basement rental saying she was having second thoughts, the way he talked her through it, the decision they made together to stay in Austin. She realized in the first few months of knowing Matt that he was going to support her dreams, listen to actually hear her, and know how to compromise. They moved in together, bought a house, and here we are.

The wedding at Columbia Gorge Hotel wasn't random. Megan grew up in Lake Oswego, Oregon, so the Pacific Northwest is home for her. For Matt and his Texas family, this was their first real look at what the PNW does. That contrast, the homecoming for her side and the introduction for his, is exactly why this venue works so well for destination weddings.

The Stairwell, the First Look, and Family Photos

Megan and Matt are not a couple who need production. They wanted time with their guests, not a full day of getting-ready coverage (neither is wrong - do what you want to do on your wedding day), so we kicked things off with a first look. I helped Matt get into position on the front lawn and then went up to Megan's room to grab her.

Some of my favorite photos from the entire day happened in that moment. Megan walking down the stairwell with her mom and her sister Ashley on either side of her. That kind of simple moment before the day officially starts is something you can't manufacture. It just happens when the people around you are exactly the right people.

Matt was waiting for her on the front lawn. When he turned to see her for the first time, his reaction was everything you'd hope for. Not performative, not exaggerated, just Matt being Matt: steady and present in every way. From there we rolled straight into family photos. Because Megan and Matt didn't do a wedding party, family was the whole formal portrait list, which kept the whole thing easy and light. Once we wrapped, I threw the drone up to capture some property shots of Columbia Gorge Hotel from above, and by the time I brought it back down, guests were starting to arrive for the ceremony.

A Ceremony That Skipped the Fluff

Matt walked in with his mom and dad. Megan walked in with her mom and dad. No wedding party, no sand ceremony, no ten additional readings, no over-choreographed anything. Her brother Patrick officiated. The whole ceremony, from the first person walking down the aisle through the first kiss, was just ten minutes.

There were close to 90 guests seated on the Pointe Lawn, many of them flown in from Texas and elsewhere. As a diehard lover of Oregon, I always love out-of-state guest lists... it's always fun to show off this part of the country.

From the Terrace to the Dance Floor

While Megan and Matt slipped inside to sign their marriage certificate, guests headed to the back terrace for cocktail hour. This is one of my favorite spots at Columbia Gorge Hotel. The terrace looks out over the Columbia River, and there's this natural pause built into the space where people just lean on the railing, drink in hand, and take in that damn good view! Hors d'oeuvres passed around, guests mingling, and the Gorge showing off. Megan and Matt joined the crowd shortly after and got a chance to actually be with their people, which was the whole point of the day for them.

From there, the reception moved to the West Lawn, with the dance floor set in the middle surrounded by ten round tables. The DJ, Cascade Dreams, handled the flow of the evening with a great sense of timing, keeping things moving without ever forcing it. Megan danced with her dad first. Father-daughter was one of the moments she flagged early in our planning as being especially important to her, and it delivered in every way. From there, she and Matt had their first dance, and right after that we pulled everyone in for the full group photo, which naturally rolled into the dance floor opening up.

Sunset Portraits, Megan's Smile, and Matt's Steadiness

Once the dance floor got going, I pulled Megan and Matt away for their couple's portraits as the light got long. We worked our way around the property and caught some of the best sunset light I've had at Columbia Gorge Hotel this year. The Gorge in August, at that hour, is hard to describe in words, so I'll let the photos do the talking.

That time away from the crowd was also when I finally had a chance to sit with everything I'd been noticing all day. I have to say something about Megan's smile. I noticed it the second I walked into her room, and I noticed it again during the first look, and again during the ceremony, and again during the reception, and again on the dance floor. Every single time I looked at her, she was smiling ear-to-ear. Not a polite social smile. A real, open, joyful, this-is-the-best-day-ever smile. She was full of joy from start to finish, and it showed in every frame.

Matt was her counterweight. He wasn't over the top and he wasn't a stick in the mud. He's the kind of person you can rely on every single time. He was attentive, caring, and completely tuned into what Megan needed all day. He celebrated hard when it was time to celebrate, but he never made the day about himself. Watching the two of them work together as a team during those sunset portraits, and throughout the whole day, was one of the most enjoyable parts of the entire wedding.

The Ends of the Earth

Here's a small window into what a wedding like this looks like on my end. The morning of Megan and Matt's wedding, I woke up in Bend, Oregon. Drove three hours north to Hood River. Photographed their entire wedding. Drove three hours back to Bend that night. The next morning I got in the car with my wife and drove twelve hours south to the base of Mt. Whitney, the tallest peak in the continental United States, for a personal trip we'd had on the books for months.

I share that not because it's impressive but because it's the reality of what I do for couples I care about. Weddings like this one, with couples like Megan and Matt, fill my cup. I'll drive whatever hours I need to drive to be there for a day like theirs.
