Epic Engagement Photography in Forest Fire Smoke

A Session Framed by Smoke


Carolyn and Connor flew in from out of town just for their engagement photos, and Bend welcomed them with wildfire smoke. At first glance, that might sound like bad luck—but for photographers, it can be gold. The haze softens the harsh Central Oregon sun, diffuses the light across the landscape, and creates tones you’d never get on a bluebird day. Instead of letting the smoke worry us, we leaned into it... and the results at Soda Creek Campground above Bend, Oregon were incredible.

From Nervous to Natural


Before the session, Carolyn and Connor were worried they’d feel awkward in front of the camera. The exact words we used were “awkward penguins.” :) That couldn’t have been further from the truth. From the first few frames, they were playful, charismatic, and completely engaged with one another. Their smiles stretched ear to ear, and they made the whole experience fun for me to capture. When a couple forgets about the camera and just enjoys the moment, that’s when the real story unfolds.

A Couple Built on Adventure


Their story fits the adventurous setting perfectly. These two got engaged right after summitting Mt. Rainier. Connor had planned to propose at the top, but altitude sickness got the better of both of them. He read the room, waited until base camp, and made it happen in a way that was every bit as meaningful. That story tells you exactly who they are—tough, resilient, and grounded in each other.


It showed in their engagement photos too. Even with smoke in the air, they laughed, explored, and embraced the moment like they always do.

When the Conditions Aren’t Perfect, But the Photos Are


This session at Soda Creek Campground was proof that engagement photography in forest fire smoke can be stunning. Carolyn and Connor leaned into the conditions and trusted me to do my thing—and the payoff was photographs that feel both timeless and true to them.


For couples worried about smoky skies, my advice is this: don’t stress. With the right approach, smoke can set the stage for photos you’ll love for a lifetime.
