I Knew I Was Going to Photograph This Wedding Before She Even Had a Ring

Eighteen months before Cam and Christina's wedding day, I met Christina and her best friend Genni at the Columbia Gorge Hotel during a venue tour. Christina hadn't even been proposed to yet, but she walked through those gardens, looked out over the Columbia River, and knew. She put a deposit down on the Labor Day weekend date before the ring was ever on her finger. That kind of certainty tells you everything you need to know about who Christina is as a person. I left that tour telling myself I was going to be her wedding photographer. I manifested the hell out of that, and I am so glad I did!

From that first meeting, I was all in. Christina has a presence that is hard to put into words. Warm, intentional, deeply feeling. She pours herself into everything she touches, and every single person lucky enough to know her feels it. I would see that truth confirmed over and over again throughout their wedding day, most powerfully during the speeches, when person after person stood up and essentially said the same thing: this woman changed my life. It was one of the most beautiful things I have ever witnessed at a wedding.

Hot Rod, Cowboy, and a Love Story Rooted Right Here in the Gorge

Cam and Christina's story didn't start with a date or a swipe or a setup. It started with work emails. Cam was an outside sales rep in Oregon and Christina was his internal sales support contact, multiple states away. Their professional chemistry was immediate and undeniable. Her strengths were exactly where he needed to grow. His strengths were exactly what she admired. Colleagues became teammates, teammates became friends, and somewhere in the middle of all of it, Cam started calling her Hot Rod and she started calling him Cowboy, and nobody was pretending anymore.

The distance was the only thing standing between them, and then a music festival took care of that. Cam had tickets to a show at the Gorge Amphitheater and his friends bailed. He sent a wide-open invite and Christina, true to form, said yes without hesitating. That weekend at the Gorge changed everything. The bond that had been building for over a year exploded into something neither of them could walk away from. Before Christina even landed back in Minnesota, Cam had already texted her: "sooo you gunna look for jobs over here or what?" She moved. Less than a month later they were hard launching on Instagram. I met Cam for the first time at their engagement shoot, and I will just say this: the camera loves that man. But more than that, he is genuinely one of the most engaging, humble, and quietly confident people I have photographed. He is completely head over heels for Christina in a way that never feels performed. Together, they are the opposite of oil-and-water. They build each other up. They work through things as a team. Photographing them together is effortless because the love is never something you have to find or coax out. It is just there and I marvel at it every time they're in front of my lens.

From the engagement shoot forward, Christina and I were in regular contact. Texts, ideas, inspiration images, logistics conversations. She was the exact kind of client I love working with because she understood from the beginning that I was not just showing up to click a shutter. I built their full wedding day timeline since they did not have a coordinator or planner. We worked through every detail together for months. That level of investment before the day even arrives is what makes the day itself run the way it should.

The Morning the Rain Showed Up and We Adapted Without Flinching

The week before the wedding, the forecast looked incredible. Soft clouds, no rain, perfect September light. I woke up the morning of September 6th and my heart sank. It was raining. Not a mist. Not a drizzle. Full-blown rain, steady enough that outdoor family portraits (and so much more) were off the table. Before I did anything else, I drove to every store I could find open in Hood River and bought every clear umbrella in town. I wanted to be ready for whatever the day required.

Cam, Christina, and I sat down together, looked at the timeline I had built with them, and made the call: push everything back two hours and let the storm move through. Because we had built buffer time into the schedule from the beginning, the adjustment was clean. No panic. No scrambling. By the time we started photographing the details and the dress, the rain was completely gone. What was left in its place was a soft, even, cloud-filtered light that I could not have ordered if I tried. It was the best possible light for portraits, and we had it for the entire afternoon.

A Ceremony Beneath the Witness Tree That I Will Not Forget

Cam and Christina did not do a first look. Cam waited at the altar and saw Christina for the first time as she walked down the aisle with her mom, Rita, at her side. He held it together. Barely. The smile that came across his face when she reached him was the kind of thing that reminds you exactly why my work is so awesome.

Their vows were extraordinary. I say that having photographed hundreds of couples, and I do not use the word lightly. They were honest and specific and completely unafraid. I was doing my job, moving and framing and anticipating moments, and I stopped. I actually stopped and let myself feel it for a moment. I shed a tear. I am not embarrassed about that at all because those vows deserved it.

The ceremony was held on the Pointe Lawn beneath the Witness Tree, overlooking the Columbia River Gorge. The name of that tree is not lost on me in the context of this couple. Everyone gathered beneath it had witnessed something of Cam and Christina's story, and now they were witnessing the chapter that made all of it make sense. Immediately after the ceremony, every single one of those guests gathered around that tree for a full group photograph. It was one of the most meaningful group shots I have taken at this venue, and I have taken a lot of them.

Cocktail Hour, a Ballroom Full of People Who Love These Two, and Speeches That Went Long in the Best Way

Cocktail hour on the Benson Ballroom Terrace was exactly what it should be: good drinks, great conversation, and a group of people so happy to be in the same place at the same time. This was a guest list of fewer than 40 people, which meant every single person there had a real reason to be there. That energy is palpable in the photos. Nobody was going through the motions.

The reception moved inside to the Benson Ballroom, set with family heirlooms, china, candlelight, and florals that felt earned rather than decorated. They mattered, and I loved photographing it all.

Speeches went long in the best possible way. Pete, Libby, Liam, Anya, Victoria, Christian, Genni, Taylor, Rita, and David all stood up and said something. Each one of them, in their own way, talked about Christina like she had changed the shape of their life. It was one of the most generous collections of love I have ever heard poured over two people at once.

The Belltower, the Sunset, and a Drone Shot I Am Still Thinking About

While the reception settled in, I pulled Cam and Christina away for their couple portraits as the sun dropped toward the Gorge. We worked our way through the property and ended up at the belltower, where I got a drone shot that is among the best I have taken at Columbia Gorge Hotel. The light, the architecture, the two of them. I love it! It is the kind of frame that makes you grateful you stuck around.

They returned to the reception, the candlelit dinner shifted into a private concert, the DJ took over, and the dance floor did not stop. Eleven hours after I started, I laid down incredible tired (and rewarded) in the best possible way. Every umbrella I tracked down that morning, every timeline adjustment, every late night text with Christina in the months before, every bit of it was worth it. Would I do it all over again? Without hesitating.
