Where the Columbia River meets one of Oregon's most incredible wedding venues
a Mountain Proposal
Carolyn and Connor met almost seven years ago. Carolyn was between undergrad and grad school. Connor had just gotten back from the Army and was heading to BCC. Six months in they had a decision to make: go long distance while Carolyn finished grad school or call it. They chose distance. They stuck it out through school, through COVID, through moving in together and figuring out each other's quirks. Connor proposed at the summit of Mt. Rainier, which is about as fitting as it gets for two people who genuinely love going through hard things together. This wedding was the next chapter.
The Morning That Started Rainy and Just Got Better
April in The Dalles came in wet. The morning was full on rainy and the kind of overcast that makes you wonder what the afternoon is going to look like. Spoiler: it got better. And better. And better! By the time we were working through bridal portraits, groom portraits, the first look and private vows on the beautiful green spring grounds of the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center, the weather had completely turned around. Everything was lush, the clouds were dramatic in the best way, and the light kept delivering.
This Venue Is Something Else
I'll be direct: the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center is one of the most incredible wedding venues I've ever photographed. The ceremony took place in the main hall of the museum, a stunning room with giant windows that look out across the Columbia River all the way to Washington. In spring the grounds are incredibly green and the property photographs beautifully from every angle. This is the kind of venue that does half the work for you, and I wasn't complaining.
The Ceremony Nobody Will Forget
Carolyn's uncle officiated and he was awesome. Funny, warm, and completely in command of the room. The moment that had everyone losing it? When Carolyn and Connor signed their marriage certificate during the ceremony, they used the best man and maid of honor's actual backs as the signing table. And yes, the Jeopardy theme played the entire time. The wedding party was a total blast all day. No drama, all smiles, exactly the kind of energy that makes a wedding day feel electric from start to finish.
Sunset, First Dance, and That Lift
We snuck away during dinner for couples portraits at sunset and the light over the Columbia River was incredible. Both of them have these stunning eyes and the closeup shots from that session are some of my favorites from the entire day. Back inside, the toasts were amazing and wrapped up by a song performed live by Carolyn's brother and sister. Then came the first dance. Carolyn picked Connor up off the ground mid-song. Full lift. The whole room erupted. Easily the best single frame of the day. After group photos with all 180 guests, the dance floor opened and they danced the night away until 11pm.
Why The Columbia Gorge Discover Center Works so Well for WeddingS
The Columbia Gorge Discovery Center isn't your typical wedding venue, and that's exactly what makes it so good. It sits on 54 acres at the east end of the Columbia River Gorge with views that stretch across the river all the way to Washington. It's a working museum with real character, and it pulls off something most venues can't: it's dramatic and intimate at the same time. Couples who celebrate here don't just get a backdrop. They get an experience.
- Those ceremony windows are in a league of their own. The main hall features floor to ceiling glass overlooking the Columbia River. No matter what time of day, the light in that room is incredible.
- 54 acres means room to actually breathe. Portraits on the grounds, cocktail hour outside, sunset photos by the river. There's no shortage of space or settings to work with.
- The venue has personality built in. You're getting married inside a world class museum. The architecture, the exhibits, the mammoth, all of it adds a layer of character that a blank ballroom simply can't match.
- Indoor and outdoor flow seamlessly. Spring greenery outside, stunning architecture inside. Whatever the weather does, the CGDC has you covered.
- It's intimate enough for the people you love, dramatic enough for photos that stop people mid-scroll. That combination is rare and this venue nails it.
If you're planning a wedding at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and want photography that does it justice, let's talk.
