Catherine + Brian
Columbia Gorge Hotel
Hood River, OR
Catherine and Brian’s Columbia Gorge Hotel wedding wasn’t about a huge guest list or elaborate production. It was about family. About connection. About a second chance at love and building something stronger than ever before.
They traveled in from out of state with under a couple dozen of their closest family and friends, keeping the day small, calm, and intentional. From the moment I arrived, the energy felt effortless. Everyone was relaxed, ready to celebrate, and the day unfolded in that beautiful, grounded way that happens when you strip away the chaos and focus on what really matters.
First Look and Private Vows
Their story started years ago when they lived in the same neighborhood. Both were coming out of heartbreak and somehow found comfort and laughter in each other’s company. It’s one of those love stories that feels meant to be.
Their first look took place in one of my favorite spots on the property, on the main lawn in front of the timeless Columbia Gorge Hotel . Brian waited with their two boys beside him, and as Catherine approached with their daughter, the excitement on their faces said it all. When they finally saw each other, it was joy, relief, and deep affection all at once.
They followed the first look with private vows—just the two of them and their kids. It was honest and full of feelings in all the right ways, the kind of moment you could feel in your chest. That quiet, powerful connection is what photography is made for. I teared up not only watching the couple exchange vows to one another, but especially the looks their children gave.
Their Point Lawn Ceremony
The Columbia Gorge Hotel’s Point Lawn has this timeless feel that works perfectly for small ceremonies. The space is open, with a view of the cliffs and river below, but it still feels private and calm.
This was a wedding built around family. Their three kids played a big part in the day—a flower girl and two ring bearers who were absolutely glowing the entire time. Watching the five of them together was incredible. You could tell this wasn’t just a wedding. It was the start of something even bigger.
And then came the surprise. During their vows, Catherine and Brian announced they were expecting. The reactions were priceless. Everyone smiled, teared up, and then they brought out a pair of tiny baby shoes and ultrasound photos. It was simply epic!
As a dad myself, I felt that moment deep down. Photographing a wedding like this—one where the future literally takes shape before your eyes—is something I’ll never forget.
Portraits Around the Property
After the ceremony, we took some time to explore the hotel grounds for portraits. We had a few moments of misty rain throughout the day, which actually gave us some of the best light imaginable. The clouds softened everything, turning the gardens into this glowing, cinematic setting. It was exactly what you hope for in the Pacific Northwest—a little unpredictable, but perfect in its own way.
One of the things I love about Columbia Gorge Hotel is that it feels like a myriad of locations in one. You can shoot by waterfalls, open lawns, archways, and forested corners... and that's just outside. It’s a dream for photography, especially for couples who want an intimate setting with real variety.
Why Columbia Gorge Hotel Is Perfect for Out-of-State Couples
For couples planning a destination wedding in Oregon, Columbia Gorge Hotel is one of those places that just checks all the boxes. It’s only an hour from Portland, surrounded by wineries, waterfalls, and incredible hikes, and the hotel itself takes care of everything—from catering to coordination to the cozy bar where guests can wind down after the ceremony.
It’s easy to see why out-of-state couples fall in love with it. You can fly in, relax, and know your entire day is in good hands. Catherine and Brian got exactly that experience, and it made their small wedding feel effortless.
New Beginnings
When I think back on this day, it’s not the weather or the view that stands out. It’s the way Brian looked at Catherine. The way their kids hugged them after the ceremony. The sound of everyone soaking up the moment as they held up that ultrasound photos.
It was love in its truest form—raw, simple, and full of hope.
Catherine and Brian’s Columbia Gorge Hotel wedding further-reminded me why I love what I do. Photography isn’t about creating perfection. It’s about catching real life as it unfolds, and this day was full of it.
